Munich, also known as Franz Josef Strauss, is Germany's second-largest airport, serving Munich and the south of the country. It served 37 million passengers in 2023 and its website can be found here www.munich-airport.com

Parking 

There are a range of choices at Munich.


Economy - free shuttle to the terminals, 0342-0052, every ten minutes (either bus 635 or S-Bahn S1/S8). The Economy car parks are broken down into P41 (north area, outdoors, online only), P43 (north area, multi-storey), P44 (north area, multi-storey), P50 (north area, outdoors), P51 (north area, multi-storey), P90 (south area, multi-storey online only)

Terminal - a few minutes walk to the terminals. These are broken down into P1, P3, and P7 for Terminal 1, and P20 and P26 for Terminal 2.

Premium - available at P20 with valet service and car wash/clean for an additional €19 per day.


Pricing is variable but the checks we carried out show about €31 for 24hrs Economy, rising to €37 for 24hrs Terminal.


Your parking ticket is used for the bus or S-Bahn to reach the terminal.


Drop Off 

There are specific kerbside areas at the terminals designed for immediate drop-off or pick-up.


At Departures it is called Kiss and Fly and you are allowed five minutes for free. At Arrivals it is called Kiss and Ride and you are allowed ten minutes for free. An additional five minutes in either area is €3


Security 


Terminal 2 is noted as being a little slower at present due to building works.


There is a faster passport system in place called Easy Pass. This is principally for people aged 12 or above from European Union countries and the usual additional countries. There are various food and drink locations at the airport. The airport only lists all the restaurants without showing which are specific to which terminal.

Lounges

Terminal 1 - Airport Lounge Europe, 0500-2030 weekdays, 0500-1930 Sat, 0500-2100 Sun, from €42, Module B Ebene 05. Also available with a voucher from Condor, Icelandair, Finnair and Eurowings.

Terminal 1 - Airport Lounge World, 0500-2200, from €54, Module B Ebene 06. Also available with a voucher from a range of airlines.

Terminal 2 - the airport site states Terminal 2 passengers can use a free shuttle bus post-security to access the lounges in Terminal 1


There is also a VIP Wing in Terminal 1 but this operates as a Terminal service of its own, starting at €510 so is very much aimed at the VIP market.


There are also lounges for Air France/KLM, Emirates, and Lufthansa.

Hotels There are a couple of on-site hotels.


Hilton - located between the terminals

Novotel - ten minutes to the airport by free shuttle bus

Ibis - bus and S-Bahn required

Movenpick - taxi required

Flightgate - shuttle for €12

Prizeotel - free shuttle

Soller - bus and S-Bahn required

Premier Inn - bus and S-Bahn required

East

Moxy - shuttle (unknown if any charge)

NH - free shuttle

Shuttles

There is a shuttle bus for the Novotel and the car parks noted can be reached by bus or S-Bahn. There is a shuttle between the terminals covered under Terminal Transfers.

Taxis

Taxis can be found at both terminals in both Arrivals and Departures. There is a service point at level 03 Terminal 2.


Buses and Coaches 

There is a service called Lufthansa Airport Bus. This departs every twenty minutes and the order of stops is

  • Munich Central Station

  • Munich North Schwabing

  • Terminal 2

  • Terminal 1 MAC


It is about forty-five minutes from the station to the airport. Singles are €12 and returns are €19.30


There are also longer routes available.

  • Lufthansa Express Bus - one route to Nuremburg and another to Innsbruck.

  • Flixbus - from Terminal 2, destinations across Germany and other European cities


The local bus service 635 connects to Freising station for onward trains.


Rail and Trams 

The airport is served by two S-Bahn lines. S1 heads to the west of the city and S8 heads to the east of the city. Trains are every ten minutes and it is about forty minutes to the city centre.

Besucherpark

  • for parking P41, P80 and P90

  • for the visitor's park

  • admin and freight areas

Flughafen Munchen

  • for both terminals

  • terminus of the lines


You can use an Airport-City Day Ticket zone M-5 or a City Tour Card zone M-6. Both options can be bought at airport machines and online. It is also possible to purchase a single journey ticket


In addition, you will find the UFEX Airport express train. This connects the Flughafen Munchen station with Regensburg, Landshut, Moosburg and Freising.

Terminal Transfer

There is a free transfer shuttle bus between the terminals. It runs every ten minutes 0700-1700, and every twenty minutes 0600-0700 and 1700-2300.


Terminal 2 is on two sites and there is an underground shuttle train between Gates G/H and Gates J/K/L/SAT. This runs every four minutes 0400-0000 and the journey is about one minute.


Car Hire

There is a rental centre at Munich Airport Center level 03 and cars are returned to parking P26 and north of P9.
